New York City Jazz Record Review, by John Pietaro

FIDOqrtet . . CD Release House Concert in Harlem Sunday, Feb 2nd @ 3pm

FIDOqrtet is a free improvising ensemble that draws from the musicians' many varied musical influences. FIDO experiences a wide spontaneous, emotional range. The outcome is often compositional, within its constantly free, beginner's mind approach. The ensemble started playing together in December of 2012, and is looking forward to it's first recorded release February 2020. Listen to excerpts here . . directions to concert . .

". . de Prophetis’ clear, warm mezzo graces nine original and well-crafted songs . . the quartet focuses on the meaning and feeling crystallized in the lines . . the audacious ensemble improv on “Plainsong,” the hypersensitive awareness of the musicians to one another’s contributions capture the listener."

"[de Prophetis] exhibits free improvisation, with experimentation in textures and dynamics.  But in her art there is not only this.  In Tell A Star de Prophetis demonstrates also knowing how to be a singer of tradition, interpreting intimate and rarified ballads, balancing searching phrases with those of Kimbrough and Horton. The CD sketches a journey of suspense and chiaroscuro, through written material, and other free, sometimes vehemently improvised passages and solos.

Among the most traditional moments we recall the radiant "Piper's Dream," with the lyrical interactions of Kimbrough and Horton that add warmth to the evanescent, colloquial singing of Maryanne.  In comparison, the tracks marked by experimental, improvised vocal that hold equal footing with her partners, we appreciated "Rosa", "Holy Cow" and "Plainsong."
